Chapter
Twenty-Three
The Governor wrung his hands and kept looking out the large living room window as if he were afraid heâd see vampires crawling up his lawn. âIâve sent for Captain Keats. Iâll order him to pursue those Fiery Damsel devils.â
Jacques raised his goblet to his lips and tossed his head back, gulping a huge swallow of wine. âDonât worry, ma chere, weâll hunt down Quinton Palmer and make him pay for his sins.â
The man was a buffoon. She couldnât prevent them from going after the Fiery Damsel, but she could make Jacques pay for his crowing.
Hannah stared at the goblet and gathered her powers.
As he lowered the glass, she casually flicked her wrist. The glass cracked, shattering into a million slivers. Golden liquid splattered, staining the wood floor. âMon Dieu!â Jacques shook his hand. Blood dripped down his middle finger.
Her uncle gasped and covered his mouth. âJacques, are you hurt?â
âOui.â
She bit back a grin.
Her fatherâs jaw tightened. âHannah.â
Hannah shrugged at his accusatory voice.
Jacques gave her a curious look as he sucked his finger. âI donât know why the glass broke. I wasnât holding it tight. You must have faulty glasses, Governor.â
âNonsense! Iâve nothing but the best crystal.â His saucer eyes widening, Uncle stared down at the floor and scanned the room. âSweet Jesus, is the demon here? What could have caused that?â
Jacques curled his lips. âIdiot. Certainement pas. Youâre letting your imagination run wild.â
Hannah bit her lip hard to keep from laughing. If they only knewâ¦
The butler walked into the room and bowed. âExcuse me, Governor, but Captain Keatsâs here to see you.â
Hannahâs gut dropped.
A blond, British naval officer entered the room. Silver sleeve badges gleamed on his blue silk waistcoat. He stepped over the glass and cocked his eyebrow. âYou sent for me, sir?â
âAhh, Captain. This is my brother, Captain Knight, and my niece, Hannah Knight. Captain Palmer of the Fiery Damsel sank their ship and murdered their crew. I want you to hunt them down and bring them back to Saint Kitts to be hanged.â
Hannah put her hands on her waist. âTell him, Uncle, or I will.â
Uncle wiped his brow with a lacy handkerchief. âOh, uh, yes. Lieutenant, supposedly the crew turns into vampires at night, so youâll have to attack them during the day. They must hide in a cove somewhere so they can sleep. Foul things only come out at night. Isnât that the legend?â
Captain Keatsâs mouth fell open, and he looked at her uncle like he was ready for Bedlam. âWhat? Iâm sorry. Did you say vampires?â
Hannah stuck out her chin. âTheyâre real, Captain Keats.â She gave him a piercing stare, daring him to argue. âDonât think these pirates sleep during the day. If you go after them, then you and your men are dead.â
Keats cocked his eyebrow again. âVampires?â He grinned. âIâm not even sure how to kill one.â
She itched to slap his patronizing face, but she held her hands tight in her lap, her fingernails digging into her flesh.
âI believe...â Uncle tapped his double chin.
